Can you work in Paris without speaking French?
Updated 12 October 2026
Short answer: yes, in the right jobs, but they are a minority. Pardon My French has screened 6,786 job offers in the Paris Region and currently publishes 564 whose ad shows French isn’t needed. Most are in tech, data, product, international sales and at companies with international teams.
Which jobs can you do in English?
- Tech and data: software engineering, data, machine learning and cloud. See tech jobs in Paris without French.
- Product and design at scale-ups selling across Europe.
- Sales and customer roles for other markets: these often need English plus another language, such as German, Dutch, Spanish or Italian.
- International marketing and growth.
- Roles at international groups whose teams work across countries.
Jobs serving French customers or the French administration, such as local sales, support, HR, legal, accounting and healthcare, almost always need French.
What to expect day to day
- At work: in English-first teams, meetings, documents and code reviews happen in English. Lunch and coffee chat may switch to French.
- Outside work: housing, banking, healthcare and administration are mostly in French. Basic French makes life in Paris much easier.
- Learning French: some employers support it, and a few ask you to reach a working level within 6 to 12 months. The job ad usually says so.
Do you need a work permit?
Citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland can work in France without a work permit. Most other nationalities need a visa or residence permit that allows work, such as the Passeport Talent (Talent Passport) for qualified profiles. Rules depend on your nationality and situation, so check the official sources:
- France-Visas, the official visa website
- Welcome to France, the official guide for international talent
When you apply, say clearly whether you already have the right to work in France or would need sponsorship.
How to find jobs that don’t need French
Read the language section of each ad. “No French required” and “our working language is English” are clear. “French is a plus” usually means the team works in English. “Fluent French” or “native French” means the role isn’t open to non-French speakers. Pardon My French does this screening for you and quotes the language evidence on every job. More detail is in English-speaking jobs in Paris.
